Installation Guide

This guide will help you install ControlNav on your Windows computer.

System Requirements

  • Operating System: Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit)
  • Disk Space: 10 MB free space
  • Dependencies: None (pure Win32 application)
  • Screen Reader: JAWS, NVDA, or Windows Narrator (recommended)

Installation Steps

Standard Installation

  1. Download the ControlNav installer from the official website or GitHub releases
  2. Run the installer ControlNav-Setup.exe
  3. Follow the installation wizard prompts
  4. Launch ControlNav automatically starts after installation

Portable Version

If you prefer a portable version without installation:

  1. Download the portable ZIP file
  2. Extract the contents to any folder
  3. Run ControlNav.exe directly

First Launch

When you first launch ControlNav:

  1. System Tray Icon appears in the notification area
  2. Welcome Dialog explains the basic features (shown only once)
  3. Global Hotkey is registered (Ctrl+Alt+U by default)

Configuration Options

After installation, you can:

  • Right-click the system tray icon for options
  • Select "Settings" to configure preferences
  • Choose "About" to view version information

Uninstallation

To remove ControlNav:

  1. Windows Settings → Apps & Features (or Control Panel → Programs)
  2. Find "ControlNav" in the list
  3. Click "Uninstall" and follow the prompts

Note: Settings are stored in the Windows Registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ControlNav and will be removed during uninstallation.

Auto-Start

To make ControlNav start automatically with Windows:

  1. Right-click the system tray icon
  2. Select "Settings"
  3. Check "Start with Windows"
  4. Click "OK"

Troubleshooting Installation

"Windows Defender SmartScreen" Warning

If you see a SmartScreen warning:

  1. Click "More info"
  2. Click "Run anyway"
  3. This happens with new applications that aren't widely downloaded yet

Permission Errors

If installation fails with permission errors:

  1. Right-click the installer
  2. Select "Run as administrator"
  3. Try the installation again

Missing Visual C++ Runtime

ControlNav is a pure Win32 application and doesn't require Visual C++ runtimes, but if you encounter issues:

  1. Download the latest Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft
  2. Install and restart your computer
